Facilities
Our school has 19 teachers including nine mainstream classes, learning support, resource and special class teachers.
It is situated in the centre of Newcastle West beside the local library on a large spacious site. The Courtenay is well resourced having interactive whiteboards in every classroom with pupils having access to computers and laptops to enhance their educational experience. There are separate play areas for each age group and a large hall for P.E., well stocked with the necessary equipment for a range of sports. This hall is also a perfect venue for our annual Christmas play.

TEACCH facilitates learning through a visual and structures teaching approach. Using visual schedules to make daily life predictable for pupils andorganised.
Also, using individual workstations to develop an independent work ethic and promote intrinsic motivation within the pupil. Using TEACCH in the classroom ensures there is a purposeful, clear and consistent schedule which outlines for the pupil …... What they are going to do, …. Who they will be working with.... where they must complete the work ... and when this work will happen within the day.
Courtenay National School has as part of its school community a special unit for children with autism.
The unit consists of two classes, which caters for six children in each. Each class has one class teacher and two Special Needs Assistants. The unit also has a Sensory Room and a Multi-Sensory Garden.
These classes aim to offer an Autism specific learning environment within a mainstream school. This type of educational setting facilitates optimum inclusion as part of the school community with access to mainstream activities as appropriate.
The classrooms are physically structured in accordance with the TEACCH Model, with specific areas for individual learning, group work, play and lunch.
The Sensory Room and Garden consists of a variety of equipment to develop fine and gross motor skills, aid sensory processing and provide exercises for both stimulation and preparation for learning.
The multi-sensory room consists of fibre-optic lights, bubble tube, projector, mirrors, a variety of textiles and mood music. This room can be used to stimulate a child or help a child self-regulate.
What is a Special Class?
If a school is allowed to run a Special Class/es it means that the school is entitled to an extra teacher to address the learning needs of the children assigned to the particular class. There are Special Classes for children with Autism children with Multiple Disabilities children with Speech and Language Disorders etc. Our schools Special Classes are for children with Mild General Learning Difficulties, ASD and Speech and Language Disorder.
What does Mild General Learning Difficulties Mean?
A child who is assessed by a psychologist as having Mild General Learning Difficulties (MGLD) is a child whose learning across the board is lagging behind others of his age as opposed to a child who for example is doing well in other subjects but has a particular difficulty with learning to read (dyslexia) or doing maths (dyscalculia). For a child to be assessed as having MGLD his / her IQ should fall into the 50-70 band. Over 70 is regarded as Borderline. The average IQ is considered to be 100. Children with MGLD can of course also have other difficulties such as problems with attention / concentration visual or hearing disability speech and language disorder etc.
How Does the Special Class Operate?
Our belief is that children with Mild General Learning Difficulties do best in a situation in which they can spend part of the school day with their mainstream peers but where they also have access to a dedicated teacher who will (a) work with them on a one-to-one basis or in small groups for intensive tuition in the vital areas of literacy and numeracy and (b) plan alongside the mainstream teachers to enable the child to benefit from mainstream lessons in other subjects such as Art History / Geography / Science/ Music /Social Personal and Health Education. In our school there is a specific room for the Special Class but the children also have a place in the mainstream classroom alongside children of their own age.
How would being in a Special Class be advantageous for my child?
If your child has been assessed as having MGLD and is enrolled in a mainstream school with no Special Class he / she will have no entitlement to any dedicated resource teaching unless another syndrome such as Autism or Emotional/Behavioural Disorder has also been diagnosed. The school may arrange for the child to receive help from the Learning Support Teacher but the amount of help and the form it will take is at the schools discretion and will depend on the schools priorities and the perceived needs of other pupils. A Special Class placement means that there is a specific teacher with overall responsibility for your child. In addition the child will be exempt from learning Irish.
How many children are in a Special Class?
The Department of Education considers that there should be between 9 and 11 children in a class designated for Mild General Learning Difficulties. Currently we have a few vacancies.
This is our amazing sensory room. It was created to provide an immersive experience for our pupils.
This room will help you to calm down. If your body is feeling sore, tense or fidgety, the sensory room will help you to feel better.
Pupils engage in imaginative interactive play based on real life experiences.
In the Courtenay Boys N.S., our teachers and SNA’s have trained to use PECS. This is one of many evidence-based interventions the school uses to support pupils. PES supports pre-verbal pupils by working to develop language skills.
PECS is an exchange of pictures, whereby the pupils uses pictures to communicate needs and desires. This helps alleviate the frustration associated with an inability to communicate.
Studies have proven, PECS develops acchild's store of vocabulary so when pupils transition to speaking the rate of acquisition is greatly enhanced using the skills gained from using PECS.
Aistear is the early childhood curriculum framework for all children from birth to six years in Ireland. ... The Framework uses four interconnected themes to describe the content of children's learning and development: Well-being, Identity and Belonging, Communicating, and Exploring and Thinking.

We have many toilets in our school. This is a toilet for most classes, we also have specific toilets if you need extra help. And don't forget it is very important to wash and dry your hands after using the toilet.
We use the halla to play games, do our morning yoga session and complete our Occupational Therapy exercises.
We also take part in the school Christmas concert which is performed for mommy’s and daddies.
All our classrooms have interactive whiteboards to play educational games which encourage participation and maintain attention.
Sensory rooms can help those who have learning difficulties, developmental disabilities or sensory impairments learn to interact with the world around them, but in a safe environment that builds up their confidence and their ability.
A sensory room is a specially designed room which combines a range of stimuli to help individuals develop and engage their senses. These can include lights, colours, sounds, sensory soft play objects, aromas all within a safe environment that allows the person using it to explore and interact without risk

Here is the circle time table. This is the fun table where you will greet your friends and teacher, sing songs, listen to stories, play games and eat your lunch. you will learn about the teachers plan for the day and what you will be doing.
